This past Thursday, Friday and Saturday (September 11-13, 2008) Chuck Sharpe and wife Darlene hosted the Forty seventh Suburban Detroit Coin Show in Livonia, MI. The show was back at its old location, the recently renovated Radisson Hotel located at the intersection of I-275 and 6 Mile.
The show had fairly strong floor traffic for the entire 3 days and given the economic conditions in Michigan, the determined collectors were out looking for everything from large cents, civil war tokens, Indian head cents, Lincolns, shield & buffalo nickels, dimes, standing liberty quarters, all sorts of half dollars, dollars US Type, paper money, as well as Roman and Greek issues. It was amazingly diverse group of collectors at the show and I think most left quite happy. The “collector” is well and busy finding selections for their collections. This is at least true around the Livonia area.
Chuck and Darlene did their usual job of making everyone comfortable and solving any problems as they arose. Security was excellent, you were escorted to you vehicle and the entire show was orderly and what we call “dealer and customer friendly”.
There were some dealers that unfortunately left early, some as early as Friday. However, if you don’t have what customers are looking for, business is going to be slow. Some of these dealers traveled to the Grand Rapids Club show which by all reports was very, very slow. Collectors are becoming more demanding with prices going up and the economy in a mess. Quality, Rarity and Value are what these new collectors are looking for and some are learning that the big auction houses might not be where the best deals are to be found. Those that stayed in Livonia seemed to be very pleased and as a group, looking forward to the next show in late January, 2009.
